Life story

Life story

Alice was born in Regents Park, London. Her parents were Henry William and Eliza Woods. Henry was born in 1805, and baptised in Fyfield, Hampshire. Eliza was born in Marylebone. Her father was Gabriel Tahourdin, and her mother, Sally Elizabeth, nee Lyford. Eliza was the middle one of 3 daughters, all born in London.

Henry and Eliza were married in Bryanston Square, in Westminster in 1841. It was his second marriage. In 1851 they were living in Heene, with their two daughters, plus Lucy, from Henry's first marriage. Their son, Henry George, then aged 9, was living elsewhere. (He subsequently went to Oxford, and was ordained.) Henry Senior was described as an Annuitant (a person who receives a fixed amount of money each year.) In 1861 they were living at 1 Double Cottage in Heene. Henry had no Profession, he was described as a Fundholder. They had one, local, House Servant. In 1871, at The Lawn, Heene, were Henry, Eliza, and daughters, Eliza Georgiana and Alice. They had a Cook and a Housemaid, and a 15 year-old Visitor, from India, Constance Welchman. In 1881, still at the Lawn, the family was joined by 13 year-old visitor from Wiltshire, Rose Brady a Cook and a Housemaid.

Alice married William Foard Tribe at Heene, in 1882. It was a second marriage for William, then 60, and very short-lived, as he died in 1887, and was buried in the Churchyard at St Andrew's Tarring.

In March 1865, Worthing Business man and Solicitor, William Foard Tribe owned a Nursery in Crescent Road. In 1866, the London Gazette has him promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant in the 11th Sussex Rifles Volunteer Corps. He was a Magistrate, well known for his opposition to the Skeleton Army during the 1884 riots. He was at one time Clerk to the Worthing Commissioners.

In 1885, William was described as of the Manor House, Broadwater. This is mainly an early 19th Century building, now Lancing College Preparatory School.

In 1891 at Lexham House, in Southey Road, were Alice, now widowed, with son William Harold, 8 and daughter Edith Eliza, 9. Her Mother, Eliza Woods, now widowed, was living with them, and they had 3 Domestic Servants. Alice stayed at Lexham House until her death. In 1901 and 1911, she had 4 Servants: a Housekeeper, Cook, Parlourmaid and Housemaid. When she died, on May 30th 1924, probate was given to her children, William Harold, now a barrister-at-law, and Edith Eliza, now Harrison.
