Life story

Ann Sandwith was born on 22nd September 1829, in Bridlington, Yorkshire; her parents were Humphrey Sandwith, MD. 37yrs, and Jane, 34yrs, nee Ward; Ann was 1 of 9 children. Ann's father was later associated with Great Ormond Street Hospital.

On February 4th, 1863, Ann, 33yrs, married Rev.Thomas William Prickett, 40yrs, at Sculcoates, Yorkshire, where both families lived in Albion St. Thomas was a Church of England clergyman, but due to failing eyesight, he had had to resign as a working vicar. Thomas and Ann moved to Cheltenham, Gloucester, they had 2 sons, Marmaduke Alan, 1864, and Francis Fenton, 1869.

Marmaduke Alan also became a Church of England priest and in 1890-1891 was curate at Holy Trinity Church, Worthing.

Thomas remained a Church of England clergyman but was also a landowner of considerable wealth. By 1891, now retired, Thomas and Ann had returned to Yorkshire and in 1901 were living in Worthing, Sussex, at Natland, Tennyson Road. In 1902 Ann was widowed when Thomas died, aged 79yrs, leaving her a very wealthy woman. She remained in Worthing where she died, aged 81yrs, on 14th February 1911.

The Rev Thomas William Prickett, of Natland, Tennyson Road, Worthing, formerly of Kingston-upon-Hull, who died on September 26th, left a will, probate of which has been granted to his widow Mrs Ann Prickett. The testator bequeathed to her his household effects and all of his personal estate and devised to her his farmhouses and buildings at Burton Pidsea, in Holderness, and at Laxton, South Cave, and Yokefield, and property at Hull and Burton-upon-Humber, and all his other real estate. The estate has been valued at £29,010 3s 4d gross, including personalty of the net value of £11,257 12s 11d.
