Life story

Arthur Somerset Day was born on 11th May 1856 in Kurrachee, Bombay, India to Henry John and Georgina Eliza Day (nee Dunsterville).

Arthur's Father Henry John was a Colonel with the Bombay Staff Corp. He served with the Bombay column in the Punjab campaign, and was present at the siege and surrender of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat. He earned a medal with 2 clasps for serving at the pursuit and surrender of the Sikh army. He was also present at the assault and capture of the fortress of Kotah, for which he earned a medal. He died on 7th May 1875 onboard the Surat while on passage from India.

In 1861 Arthur's father must still be serving in India, as Arthur's Mother Georgina is staying at no 4 Crescent Place Brighton Sussex, with her 4 children.

In 1871 Arthur's father is still not with his family as he is still serving in India. Georgina and her family are now living at 10 Potter Street Bedford.

Arthur met and married Kate Ford on 3rd June 1879 at Swinford Oxford. There is no record of any children being born.

Arthur worked for the Civil service as a 2nd class clerk for the India Office. The India Office was a British Government department established in London in 1858 to oversee the administration through a Viceroy and other officials, of the Provinces of India.

In 1881 Arthur and Kate are living at 3 Mayfield Road Wimbledon

By 1911 they are living at 76 Comeragh Road, West Kensington London. Arthur has retired from the Civil service and is living on a pension. Sometime between 1911 and 1914 Arthur and Kate moved to Worthing and were living at Whyteleafe, Shakespeare Road Worthing Sussex. Kate died on the 10th February 1916 at Studley House, Shelley Road. Worthing.

Arthur then married Rhoda Cole in 1919 at East Preston Sussex. Arthur died on 20th August 1920 while living at Ebenezer, Heene Road, Worthing, Sussex. He left an estate of £2502 8s 4d (£72702 in 2020) to Rhoda Day.

Rhoda died on 15th October 1944 at St. Richards hospital Chichester, she was living at Whyteleafe 59 Pavilion Road Worthing Sussex

Obituary Notices - Col. H.J. Day - Col. Henry John Day, Bombay Staff Corps., died on board the "Surat" while on passage from India on May 7, aged fifty-six. The deceased obtained his commission as ensign, Dec 12 1840; became lieutenant, April 21 1845; captain, Dec 12 1855; brevet major, Feb 18 1861; major, Sept. 12 1866; lieut-colonel, Dec 12 1866; and colonel, Dec 12 1871. He served with the Bombay column in the Punjab campaign of 1848-49, and was present at the siege and surrender of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat, pursuit and surrender of the Sikh army (medal with two clasps). Served on the general staff of the Rajpootana field force, under Major-Gen. Roberts, as paymaster, during the campaign of 1858, and was present at the assault and capture of the fortress of Kotah (medal).
