Life story

Life story

Bertha was born in Wrexham, the daughter of William and Margaret. She was baptised at Minera on 5 Jul 1860. William was a civil engineer who also owned a colliery. When he died in 1886, his obituary mentioned that he had been assistant engineer in the construction of the Great Western Railway main line. He was also one of the earliest promoters of the Channel Tunnel enterprise in 1866 and had bought land at Dover and Calais to facilitate the project. He died in 1886. Bertha married Robert Williams Thrupp at St Cuthbert's, Kensington on 11 Jan 1888. Ruth was born later that year, followed by Hilda in 1889. The family moved to Alderminster near Stratford-on-Avon where Robert had been appointed vicar. Between 1891 and 1900, six more children were born; Monica Mabel in 1891, Ursula Muriel in 1892, Agnes Helena in 1894, Joyce in 1895, Robert Lucien in 1898 and Caspur William in 1900. In 1902, Mary Agatha was born and finally in 1907, Hermine Magdalene completed the family. Robert died in 1914 three years after moving to Worthing. By 1919, Bertha had left Worthing. She died at 143 Oakwood Court, Kensington on 13 Jun 1930.
