Life story

Charles Darrell was the youngest of eight children, born on 28th January 1841, in Ayton, Scarborough, Yorkshire, to John Darrell, 60yrs. a farmer, and Jane Darrell, 41yrs. In 1861, at 20yrs.of age, he was a clerk in a Fire and Life Assurance Company, living at 25, Canonbury Square, London, with his married sister, Margaret Hornsby and her husband, Thomas, a ship owner. Charles married Emily Elizabeth Jones, 23yrs, September 1870, in Hereford; she was born in Middlesex, 1847 and was the eldest of 7 children, her father, Charles Harries-Jones was a Royal Naval Paymaster and her family lived at High Street, Chobham. Charles and Emily moved to Sidcup, Kent, and had 9 children between 1872 and 1892, Charles, Claud, Herbert, Sydney, Emily, Beatrice, Agnes, Lilian and Violet. By 1901, Charles, aged 60yrs. had risen to become Insurance Company Secretary and was living at 10, Belmont Road, Lewisham, with Emily, 53yrs., Claud, 28yrs., Solicitor, Emily K. 22yrs, Beatrice, 20yrs, Agnes, 16yrs, Lilian, 13yrs, Violet, 9yrs, and 3 domestic servants. In 1911, Charles, 70yrs, was retired and living at Beech View, Sidcup Hill, Kent. He had been married to Emily, 63yrs, for 40 years and all nine of their children had survived. Three unmarried daughters lived with them, Emily Kathleen, 32yrs, Beatrice Stella, 30yrs, Teacher, and Violet Winfred, 19yrs. At some time after 1911 the family moved to Worthing and lived at 7, Winchester Road. Charles Darrell died, aged 80yrs, on 22nd April 1921, Worthing. Probate was granted to his son, Sidney Thornton Darrell, Insurance Official. Effects £4541 9s 11d. Value 2020 - £223K.
