Life story

Life story

Charles was born in Portsea, Hampshire, the son of a Royal Navy seaman also called Charles William. He joined the Navy in his teens. His service number was 76675 and his continuous service number was 37901A. Charles was described as 5ft 6ins tall with brown hair, grey eyes, fair complexion and no wheals, scars or marks.

HMS Himalaya
H.M.S. Himalaya

His first ship was the "Himalaya" and his conduct was consistently "very good" and even "exemplary".

Charles served on troopships and in 1901 was working as Port Commissionaire in London. His role was to act as an intermediary between the shipper and consignee and negotiate a sale for a commission. Charles married twice. His first marriage was in 1879 to Emma Goble. She died on 7th August 1904 and in April 1905, Charles married Charlotte Lambourne of 11 Clifton Road, Worthing. The marriage took place at Holy Trinity church, Worthing. Charles was aged 54 and Charlotte aged 20. Neither marriage seems to have produced children. Charles died on 4th March 1916 at 47, The Drive, Worthing. No probate.
