Life story

Life story

Charlotte Elizabeth Butt was born in St. Leonard's, Hastings, Sussex, in 1850; she was the daughter of William Butt, 29yrs, a civil engineer, and Mary Elizabeth, 24yrs, nee Sherborn. She had at least 6 siblings, Henry William b.1849, Emily Mary b.1852, Frances Edith b.1865, Mabel Muriel b.1867, John Herbert b.1870, and Percy Decimus b.1872. In her father's will, in 1904, he mentioned a lost son, Frank, but there is no record of his birth. His estate was divided between 5 children, excluding Charlotte, who he said was amply provided for but there is no clue where her money came from.

In the census of 1881 Charlotte was staying with her uncle, John Molesworth Butt, the Vicar of Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, and her next census appearance is in 1911, aged 60yrs, when she was living in Worthing with her sister, Emily, and brother-in-law, John Ruddach. Charlotte appears to have moved to Worthing permanently about this time and lived at Wingrave, 30, Heene Road.

Charlotte died on 28th March 1928, aged 77yrs. Probate was granted to John Herbert Butt, Railway Official, Minnie Sophia Davis, widow, Frances Edith Butt and Mabel Muriel Butt, spinsters. Effects, £12077 13s 2d. Value 2022 - £808,400.

Excerpt from Charlotte’s father’s Will

The testator left the residue of his estate as to nine tenths thereof upon trust for his children, William Henry Butt, Percy Decimus Butt, Minnie Sophia Butt, Emily Mary Butt and John Herbert Butt. The remaining one-tenth of his estate is to be held upon trust for his lost son, Frank, but should he not apply for his share thereof within a period of two years, then this tenth of the ultimate residue of Mr. Butt's estate is to be held upon trust for his said five children. He had not bequeathed any sum to his daughter, Charlotte Elizabeth Butt, as she was already amply provided for.
