Life story

Life story

Christian William McNiell was born on 18th June 1827, he was baptised on 3rd October 1828 at All Soul's, Marylebone. His parents were William McNiell, 20yrs, a Merchant, and Augusta Maria, 23yrs, nee Dietrichsen.

In 1854 Christian enlisted on 8th December to the Hampshire Regiment of Militia, with the rank of Colonel. In 1855 he served in the Eastern Campaign and was present at the siege of Sebastopol, he was awarded Medal with Clasp and the Turkish Medal.

On 23rd May 1857, Christian married Frances Penelope Dipple Humphreys at Erith, Kent, they were both 30yrs of age, their daughter Ellen Augusta was born in 1859. Christian was an Army Captain in 1861 and they lived in Greenwich. A son, Hardinge C. McNiell, was born in 1864 in Kent, and a second daughter, Frances Maria Christine, was born in Southsea in 1868. The family returned to Woolwich where they remained until Christian retired and they then moved to Worthing, living at Gracemere, Richmond Road, Heene.

Christian William was widowed in 1904 and later moved to Hardingstone, Shakespeare Road, where he died, on 7th October,1914, aged 87yrs. Probate was granted to his daughters, Ellen Augusta and Frances M. C. McNiell. Effects £8664 1s 5d. Value 2020 - £1.06m.
