Life story

Life story

Edwin Henry Crafer was the first born of seven children born to Edwin Turner Crafer from Wandsworth and Maris Margaretta Rucker from Streatham in London. Edwin Henry was the first born in 1939, Maria Mary 1841, Alfred 1843, Reginald Grey 1845, Charles Augustus 1848, Isabel Rosa 1851, Julia Ann 1854. Edwin's Father dies in 1854 while the family are living in Brixton London.

His father worked at the Treasury department, when he died, he left his wife a pension of £150 which now would be worth £16,700 a year. The children mainly follow the occupation in Civil service and work in various government offices and are referred to as Gentleman in Census's and directories.

Edwin worked for the Inland Revenue at Somerset House, working in the Legacy and succession Duty department and his role would have been agreeing the charges of Tax from the Estates of the deceased. The family live mainly in Clapham and Brixton area of London, then at East Moseley. Edwin lives at home with his mother until her death in 1897 at Lonsdale House, East Moseley.

The following year Edwin marries Isabel Crump in Steyning and is 23 years her Senior. The couple live in Worthing at "Iddesleigh" Down View Road, Worthing.

Two or three years before Edwin's parents were married his fathers brother married his mother's sister. Many of their children are all born at the same time. This Crafer family were living in and around Brighton and this could have been the draw to Worthing for Edwin.

Also, a house that Edwin lived in as a young man was also the name "Iddesleigh" the same as the house he named in Worthing when living in Worthing.

Three years later after marrying Isabel Crump unfortunately she dies and is buried at Heene Cemetery. Edwin Henry is also buried by her side 16 years later in 1917.

The Last Will and Testament for Edwin Henry Crafer was dated 24th October 1912 and has four Codicils dated 18th March 1913, 25th September 1914, 5th January 1916 and 14th Janaury 1917.
