Life story

Life story

Eliza Beveridge, senior, was born on 20 August 1840 in Pimlico to William Quin, a soldier, and Eliza Howell Barton nee Millwaters and was baptised on 23 August. In 1851 she was living in Bloomsbury with her widowed mother and two sisters. Eliza  married a man called William Beveridge who was a Revenue Officer and a Freemason. He was initiated into St John's Lodge on 22 December 1858 when he was 23 .

Nothing more was found about him except that their daughter was born in Antigua  on 7 July 1863. The 1861 and 1871 censuses could not be found but  Eliza, senior, was a widow by 1881. She was back in England then and working as a general servant in the household of a victualler in Aldersgate Street, London. Eliza, junior, was also in London employed as a governess. In 1891 Eliza, senior, was a lady housekeeper for Mr and Mrs Walter James Scott of Kingston Hill, London. In the 1900s the Eilzas, senior and junior, lived together in Surrey. In 1901 they were at 8, Clifton Road, South Norwood and in 1911 at 17, Stanley Road, Upper Warlingham. The latter Census revealed that Eliza, senior, was only married for 6 years and only had the one child. When she died in May 1918 aged 78 she was living in the Worthing area. No probate announcement was found.
