Life story

Life story

Elizabeth Frances Underwood was born on 16th May 1830 in Fife Aberdeen to Robert and Frances Lindsay.  Robert was a Gentleman and landed proprietor, which seems to mean that he owned lands in Scotland that may have been inherited. He also stood for election as a conservative candidate in Fife in 1841

Elizabeth married Thomas Nourse Underwood on 20th January 1864 in St. Mary's Portsea, Hampshire. There are no records of any children being born

Thomas was commissioned on 17th February 1849 in the Royal Navy. He gained the rank of lieutenant on 2nd July 1851. He became a Commander on 28th November 1863 serving on the Duke of Wellington. He retired from the Navy on 13th July 1870 with the rank of Captain, late of the Royal Navy.

In 1871 they are living in Newstead house, Venns Lane, Ledbury, Hereford.  Thomas was a J.P. for the city of Hereford.

In 1881 they are living at Aylestone Hill near Venn's Lane Ledbury Hereford

In 1891 they have moved to Worthing and are living at Wye House, Downview Road, Worthing Sussex.  Thomas died on 17th February 1899 at Wye House, Worthing.

Elizabeth moved to 155 St. Peter's Road, Reading, Berkshire after her husband died. She died on 7th December 1916 whilst living at Southcote Road, Reading. She was buried in Heene Cemetery next to her husband.

She left an estate of £9848 4s 3d (£580,000 in 2020)
