He was born in Brockhurst, Alverstoke, Hampshire in 1858 and married Ellen Mary Elliott at Heene on 1 May 1881. The brothers were brickmakers and worked at the Tarring Brickfields at the west end of Tarring Road, north of the railway line. In 1891 Edwin lived at Brickyard Cottages, Tarring End Lane.
