Life story

Life story

Florence Maud Mainwaring was the daughter of Henry Foley, an Army Captain, and his wife Elizabeth. Florence was born in Tours, France, in 1844 but was British by parentage. The family was living in Berkshire in 1851, in Canterbury by 1861, and in Gloucestershire by 1871. The Foleys were a wealthy family having many children, 8 servants and a governess to educate the children at home. On 15 October 1876 Florence married a man of impressive lineage. His earliest known forebear, according to Burke's Family Records', was a companion in arms with William the Conqueror and was rewarded with lands in Cheshire. Florence's husband, Karl Heinrich Augustus Mainwaring, was a Captain in the Royal Navy and despite his German birthplace was British. He was the seventh son of Rear Admiral Rowland Mainwaring who had served with distinction in the Battle of the Nile and at the blockade of Copenhagen. In 1883 Florence's sister, Edith, married one of Karl's brothers, Randolph Mainwaring. The Mainwaring motto means In Front If I Can in English. Little is known of Florence's married life as in the 1881 and 1891 Censuses, she could not be found. However, in 1901 she and Karl were living at 32, Midvale Road, St Helier on Jersey in the Channel Islands. Karl died in 1906 and by 1911 Florence was in Worthing at Durris', Byron Road with two servants. She died there on 29 November 1921 aged 72 and left the enormous sum of £11, 608 1s 6d. Probate was given to dame Mabel Edith Geraldine Napier widow and Robert William Charles solicitor. N.B. Dame Mabel Edith Geraldine Napier was the wife of William Lennox Napier, barrister and Baronet, and the daughter of Charles Thornton Forster and Lucy Selina Geraldine Foley (sister of Florence) therefore a niece. Robert William Charles of Charles and Malcolm, solicitors, were at 1 Highworth, Worthing

She bequeathed her parrot Polly to her nurse, Margaret Benyon, and £5 as a contribution towards its upkeep.
