Life story

Life story

Frances was baptised at St John's. Brixton, on 20 June 1862. Her mother was Emma, nee Cooke, and her father was William Edmund Slaughter, an assurance clerk. In 1881 they were living at 38, Grafton Square, Clapham. On 26 May 1887, Frances married Bernard Ferdinand Simpson, an architect and surveyor, from Newcastle. On the marriage certificate, Bernard's father is described as a "railway contractor" while Frances's was "a gentleman". They were married at Lewisham and at the time of the 1891 Census were living at 12, Akenside Terrace, Jesmond, in Northumberland, with two children, Gladys, aged 3, and an infant daughter, just 10 days old. They were still in Northumberland in 1901 but had moved to "Moorside", South Gosforth, and employed a governess, a cook and a housemaid. NB When Bernard died in February 1940, he left £78,697 17s 3d to their daughter, Lady Gladys Beatty, married to a Colonial Official, Sir Kenneth James Beatty, who was appointed Chief Justice of the Bahamas in August 1927.
