Life story

Life story

Frederick George Rogers was born in Elsenham, Essex, in 1861, his birth was registered in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. When he was 10yrs old, he was living at the Boar's Head Public House, Bishops Stortford, with his older brother, John Rogers, 23yrs, the licensee, and his sister, Jane, 20yrs.

In 1881, Frederick was living and working in London, in the drapery trade. At some time over the following decade, Frederick moved to Capetown, South Africa, where, in 1892, he married Adah Shelley, an English woman, born in Brighton, Sussex, employed in the drapery trade as a milliner. Their daughter, Edith May, was born in 1893 in Woodstock, Capetown.

Frederick was a Freemason, and in 1897, aged 35yrs, he was initiated into St. George's Lodge, Capetown, where he was a member until 1909. Frederick, with his wife and daughter returned to England and in 1911 were living in Worthing, at 5, South Place.

Frederick was widowed in 1928 when Adah died, aged 68yrs, in Worthing. He moved to Bromley, Kent, where he died, aged 78yrs, on 10th October 1938. Probate was granted to his daughter, Edith May Bean, (wife of Robert Frederick Bean), effects £150 8s 2d. Value 2021 - £10K.
