Life story

George Bullen was born in Islington in 1834, he was the son of George Bullen, 28yrs, Sheep Salesman, and Arabella, 23yrs, nee Brett. George had an older brother, Francis, b.1829. At 17yrs years of age, George was a clerk in a ship insurance business and within ten years he was an underwriter and insurance broker, a career he pursued for the next fifty years, becoming extremely wealthy.

On 9th March 1861, aged 27yrs, George married Mary Moncaster Mitcheson, 19yrs, at St. Anne, Limehouse, and over the following fifteen years they had 8 children.

George had retired by 1911 and at some point, afterwards, he and Mary moved to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at Escot, St. Michael's Road. George died on 19th May 1922, aged 88yrs, probate was granted to The Royal Exchange Insurance, effects £97,289 19s 4d. Value 2021 - £5.7m.
