Life story

Life story

George was born in Pulborough, Sussex, the son of Edmund and Lucy nee Slater. His father ran The Red Lion Inn on the London Road for a while. George was baptised in Pulborough on 29th January 1843. By 1861, George had moved to Wisborough Green, Sussex living with his mother's family and working as a labourer. John Slater was the local blacksmith. In 1866, George married Lucy Denyer in Brighton. Her family also came from Wisborough Green. George and Lucy moved to Worthing living with Lucy's family, where George found work as a gardener's labourer. He was also employed as a lamplighter and kept this job until gas lamps were phased out in the early 1900s. By 1881, George and Lucy had 5 children and lived in Warwick Road. They later moved to Edinburgh Cottages in Western Row. Their final address was 2 Milton Road. It was here that Lucy died in July 1917. George stayed on in Milton Road with his daughters Bessie and Alice. He died in May 1929 and was buried at Heene on 21st May. No probate.
