Life story

George Anthony Warleigh was born on the 1 September 1850 at Parkhurst Prison, Isle of Wight to Henry and Ann, nee Warleigh, Smith. Henry Smith was the Prison Chaplain. By the age of 10 George was a pupil at Springhill House, a boarding school at Millbrook, in Hampshire, under the headship of John Raddon Crabbe. The 1871 England Census could not be found but he enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1872 and the 1881 Census found him with the rank of Lieutenant on board HMS Beacon. He had already served on Excellent and Glatton and went on to serve on the Duke of Wellington, Pembroke, Leander, Revenge, Tamar, Black Prince, Swiftsure and Malabar before being retired, unfit, with the rank of Commander and a pension of £235 a year on 5 February 1892. He had married Mary Louisa Truefitt, the only daughter of George Truefitt, architect, on 28 November 1883 at Tufnell Park, Middlesex. In 1891 George was on board HMS Black Prince in Devon while Mary was living with her parents at Shelsley Lodge at Broadwater. Under 'occupation' in the 1891 Census beside her name is written wife of Lieutenant George A Warleigh which has been crossed out. This seems to be because it was an unnecessary entry not because of a divorce. When George died on 19 September 1909 at 'Moorings', Mill Road, Worthing, he left £2365 3s 11d to his widow, Mary Louisa Warleigh.

The Late Commander Warleigh - Funeral at Worthing

At Heene Cemetery, yesterday morning, the funeral took place of Commander G.A. Warleigh, R.N. Deceased, who was 59 years of age, had lived at Worthing since his retirement from the Royal Navy in 1892. His death occurred, after but a short illness, at his residence, Moorings, Mill Road. The funeral service was conducted at St Botolph's Church by the Rev. C.J. Hollis (Vicar of Holy Trinity), the lesson being read by the Rev. W.B. Ferris (Christ Church). The polished oak coffin was covered by a Union Jack, and on the top were placed the deceased's sword and epaulets. There were numerous floral tributes, including an anchor composed of red and white flowers, from the Worthing branch of the Navy League, of which the deceased was Hon. Secretary.
