Life story

Life story

Georgiana was the daughter of Charles George Carpenter Oriel, a solicitor, and his wife, Henrietta Mary Oriel, nee Tarral. She was born in 1846 at St Giles, London and had three sisters, Sarah, Henrietta Vicenza and Emily. In 1851 Sarah, Georgiana and Henrietta were being educated at home in Finsbury, London. In 1851 Georgiana's mother died and in 1855 her father married Sophia Bevington and by 1861, Georgiana and Sarah were among 25 scholars, aged 18 to 8, at a girls' school called Marlowes in Hemel Hempstead. In 1871, Sarah, Georgiana and Emily were living at home with their father and stepmother with no occupations but by 1881 Sarah and Georgiana were school mistresses and had a school of their own at Ramenham House in Worthing. There were 6 pupils, aged between 12 and 8, all boys. The sisters seem to have retired by 1891 and were living with another sister, Henrietta Vinceza, at 2, Heene Villas, Heene Road. By 1911, Sarah and Georgiana were still living at 2, Heene Villas but described as nurses. Georgiana could not be traced in 1921. She was not in the same house as Sarah at that time. However, when she died on 13 March 1923 she named Sarah as the administrator of her Will. Her effects amounted to £15,252 18s 11d.
