Life story

Henry Frederick Holmes was born on 10th December 1814 in Stoke Newington, Middlesex, to Edward Holmes, 34, and Elizabeth Ann, 25, nee Morell, and was 1 of 7 children. Henry and his 6 siblings were all listed as non-conformist on the non-parochial register. Henry became a Congregational minister and registered as a Protestant Dissenter on 29th July 1837. On 29th July 1840 he married Jane Waldo, 27yrs, nee Olive, widow of a non-conformist minister, at St. Thomas, Hackney. They had 7 children.

Henry's wife, Jane, died on 9th July 1887, aged 74yrs, at Wirksworth, Derby, probate was granted to Henry, at Cerne Lodge, Selden Road, Worthing. His occupation was given as Dissenting Minister.   Henry retired in 1895, he was cared for by his unmarried daughter, Emma Louise, and on January 15th, 1906, aged 90yrs, Henry died at Glenwood, Rowlands Road, Worthing, Sussex.

Obituary

Gloucester Echo

The funeral took place on Friday at Worthing, of the Rev. Henry Frederick Holmes, who was probably the oldest Congregational minister in England. On December 10 he reached the age 90 and he died on Monday. was a brother-in-law of the late Mr. Edward Miall. the well-known Liberationist champion, who represented Rochdale and Bradford.

The death is announced at Worthing, of Reverend Henry Frederick Holmes, 90yrs. He was the oldest Congregational minister in England, his ministry extending over 57yrs. He retired in 1895 after holding pastorates at Wendover, Boston, Wimborne, Devonport, Buckingham, Wirksworth, Potterspury  and Uckfield.
