Life story

Life story

Henry Van Notten Pole was born at Wolverton, Hampshire. His father was Rev. Henry Van Notten Pole and his mother was Anne nee Blagrave. The Pole family could trace their descent back to Henry de Ferrars, a supporter of William the Conquerer, who was rewarded with Tilbury Castle and became the 1st Earl Derby, Succession sometimes followed the female line and a daughter married Sir Peter de la Pole. A few generations later, Milicent Pole married Charles Van Notten in 1769, who took the name Pole and was created 1st Baronet Wolverton in 1791. Their son, Peter, became 2nd Baronet. One of Peter's brothers, Rev. Henry Pole, was the father of  Henry Van Hotten Pole buried here at Heene in 1906. ( The name Van Hotten was re-assumed by royal licence in 1835). Henry married twice. On 12 April 1849 his bride was Eliza Anne Dickins and in 1885 he married Josephine, about 30 years younger, whose maiden name could not be found. By Eliza , henry had Constance Laura and George Henry Thomas. George married Lucy Jeanette, maiden name unknown, and both are buried at Heene. Henry did not live in Worthing.  His home for many years was Watermoor House at Cirencester in  Gloucestershire. It is now a residential care home with 38 bedrooms all with en suite facilities, When he died, at the 'Queen's' hotel in Hastings, his London address was 5, Hyde Park Terrace, he left £84,595 12s 3d , equivalent to over £6 and a half million.
