She was baptised at St Sepulchre, Holborn on 30th September 1849. Her father was a master painter and builder. For a while the family lived in Chelsea but by 1861, they had moved to Brighton and John had changed jobs. He started as a beer seller and graduated to licensee of various public houses and hotels. Jane became a cook and worked for her father. In 1879, she was working at The Royal Yacht Inn in Sussex Street, Brighton and then moved with her family to Hailsham where they took over the running of the George Inn. By 1891, Jane was working at the Crown Inn in Hailsham which her father had taken over. Her mother died here in 1893. Cobden Inn in Clifton Road, Worthing in 1872 Jane's sister Henrietta to whom she had been very close, had married Alfred Thompson who ran the Cobden Inn in Clifton Road, Worthing. This photograph taken in 1872 shows Alfred and Henrietta Thompson standing on the steps of the Cobden Inn with their daughter Alice. Alfred gave up the pub in 1892 and moved his family to Hertford Road. He died in 1897 and Jane moved in to help with the children and run the household whilst Henrietta ran another of the family pubs The Ship Inn at Whiteman's Green in Cuckfield. John Lennox Butcher died at the inn on 28th December 1900. By 1911, Jane, Henrietta and her niece Fanny were living in Shakespeare Road.
