Life story

Julia Elizabeth Rowe (nee Clayton) was born in 1857 Marylebone, Westminster, London to Henry and Emma Clayton. Julia's Father Henry Clayton worked as an engineer and the family lived at Woodfield House, Paddington, London.

Julia married John Gambell on 30th September 1884 at St Peter's church, Paddington, Middlesex.  After they were married, they moved to Aston Rowant, south Oxfordshire, where John worked as a farmer.

John and Julia had 3 children-

Dennis Clayton Gambell born 1895, Aston Rowant, Oxfordshire.  Dennis was killed in action in Palestine on 30th April 1918 and is buried at the Jerusalem memorial, Israel. He joined the Sussex Yeomanry as a Lance Corporal in 1914 and obtained a commission with the 2nd 19th London Regiment as a Lieutenant. The 2nd   19th London Regiment were involved in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of the middle Eastern theatre of WW1. This was fought between the British Empire and the Ottoman Empire.

Philip Clayton Gambell born 1887 Aston Rowant, Oxfordshire. Married Vida Marjory Bristow Webster on 18th June 1913 at Hendon Middlesex. Philip worked as an Estate Agent. He died in 1954 in Buckinghamshire

Henry Clayton Gambell born 1891 Aston Rowant, Oxfordshire. Served with the RASC in WW1 as a 2nd lieutenant. He was involved in the Mesopotamia campaign, which was the middle eastern campaign of WW1. He earned the Victory Medal. He died in 1955 in Ealing Middlesex. Marriage details unknown

In 1901 John and Julia are farming at Woodway farm in Aston Rowant Oxfordshire. By 1911 John and Julia and their Son Dennis Clayton have moved to Portlet Downview Road Worthing Sussex.  John died on 1st February 1911.  By 1913 Julia has moved to Marlborough House Marine Parade Worthing.  Julia married Walter Burrows Rowe on 17th May 1913, Walter was a Bank Office Manager. She died on the 2nd November 1932, she was living at 14 Shelley Road Worthing. She left an estate of £7091 2s 1d (£325000 in 2020) with probate to Walter Burrows Rowe and Philip Clayton Gambell.
