Life story

Life story

Gertrude as she was always known was born in Worthing, the daughter of Fanny Medhurst. She was baptised Lilian Gertrude Medhurst but was given the surname Goldring when Fanny married Henry Percival Goldring, a brick moulder in 1894. As a baby, she lived with her grandmother Sarah Medhurst in West Street. By 1901, Gertrude was living with her parents in Wallace Avenue. In 1913, she married Christopher Miles from Goring. He was an able seaman who had joined the Navy in 1902. His Navy records show that between August 1914 and December 1915, Christopher was at home caring for Gertrude who was suffering from TB. Christopher took a job as a letter carrier during this time. Gertrude died at her parents home, 61 The Drive on 20th September 1915. No probate.

Christopher returned to the Navy until he retired in 1938. He re-married and lived in Goring.
