Life story

Louisa Sophia Cornish nee Hunter 1835 - 1915 Born in Margate When Louisa Sophia Hunter was born on 18th May 1835 in Margate, Kent, her father, George Yeates Hunter, was 41, and her mother, Mary Ann Cobb, was 30. Louisa's father was a distinguished surgeon and mayor of Margate. Louisa had three sisters, Caroline, born in 1829, Mary born in 1831 and Ann born in 1834.

She married William Robert Cornish on 21 March 1854. William Cornish was a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons and was employed by the East India Company when he married Louisa. Their child, William Hunter, was born on the 6th February 1855 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Louisa and William returned to England in the late 1880's after William's retirement as Indian army's Surgeon General, and in 1891 they lived in 8 Cresswell Gardens, Kensington, London with their baby grandson Phillip Victor Cornish and 3 servants. Phillip had an older brother, Arthur William Dauncey, who was staying with his parents and great uncle Henry Cornish in Berkshire. Phillip was the son of William Hunter Cornish and his wife Harriette Maud Mary Harris and was born on the 18th July1889 in Simla, India. Phillip's father, William, died in Simla in 1892.  Phillip died in 1916 as a Captain in Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infanty serving in Belgium.

Louisa's husband, William Robert Cornish, died in 1897 at Corvil, Shelley Road Worthing. Widowed, Louisa, was living at Corvil in 1901 with 3 servants including Frederick and Fanny Hunt. Fanny died in 1905 and is buried in Heene Cemetery. Louisa  died on 7 August 1915 in Worthing, Sussex at the age of 80 years.

Educated at St George's Hospital. He succeeded in 1815 to the practice of his father, long well known, at Margate. For many years he was the leading practitioner in the Isle of Thanet, and was intimately associated with sanitary improvements at Margate. He was JP and Alderman for the Cinque Ports, first Mayor of Margate, to which he was re-elected, and held office at the time of his death. He was also President and Trustee of the Margate Literary and Scientific Institute, Surgeon to the Royal Sea-Bathing Infirmary and of the Branch Establishment of the Deaf and Dumb Asylum, Margate; and Assistant Surgeon to the Cinque Ports Volunteer Artillery. He practised in partnership with Dr Thornton; died at Margate on November 2nd, 1866, and was buried there.
