Life story

Life story

Margaret was born in Simla, India, the daughter of Alexander and Emelia. She was baptised in Simla on 16th June 1848. Although baptised as Margaret, she was always known as Elizabeth. Margaret and her sister Catherine were fairly free with their ages on all the available census records, none were accurate. Alexander worked for the East India Company as a civil servant. After his death pre 1871, his widow and daughters returned to England, living in London. Emelia died in Freiburg, Germany on 20th October 1897. Her daughter Catherine was her executor. The two sisters moved to Paddington and then to Kent. By 1921, they were living in Hawkhurst. Margaret died in Worthing on 26th February 1929. The curate of St Matthew's church conducted her funeral. Her sister died in London in 1934 and was buried with her at Heene. No probate.
