Life story

Life story

Maria was born in Worthing, the daughter of John and Maria. She was baptised at Broadwater Church on 10th January 1841. Her father was a baker. The family lived in Market Street and then later moved to new premises in North Street. On 6th October 1864, Maria married George Kidd at St Nicholas Church, Brighton. The couple moved to Worthing and opened a baker's shop in Brunswick Road. Maria assisted her husband in the business which became very successful. Adverts appeared in the local paper every week and there were several mentions in the paper's columns regarding the excellent food provided by the bakery at many events. George and Maria had four children; George who became a grocer, Kate and Gertrude who assisted in the bakery, and Ernest who sadly died aged 9 from diphtheria. George died in December 1898 and Maria carried on the business with her daughters until her retirement. By 1911, Maria was living with her daughter Kate in Milton Street. They later moved to Thorn Road where Maria died on 29th April 1929. Probate was granted on 28th June to Kate Maria Kidd spinster and Gertrude Marian Waddington wife of Walter Warwick Waddington. Effects £1340 3s 1d.
