Life story

Life story

Martha was born in 1859 to George and Ann Wright.  George worked as an Agricultural Labourer in Mundsley, Norfolk. 

By 1881 Martha had left the family home and was living at Row 35 Great Yarmouth Norfolk, she was lodging at Mary Ann Cooper's lodging House .

It is unknown why the rows originated as a town layout system, perhaps unique to Great Yarmouth. The rows were given numbers in 1804 and  there were 145 rows, but each row was extremely narrow. They were demolished in the 1930's as they were classed as slums. 

Martha married Christopher Fell on 18th July 1883 at St Barnabas Church, Kensington. They did not have any children. 

By 1891 they were living at 58 Gordon Place, Kensington. Christopher was working as a Carpenter and Joiner 

In 1901 they are living at 19 Queens Gate Place, Kensington, Christopher is now working as a Domestic Caretaker and Martha is working as a domestic Housekeeper. 

By 1911 Christopher and Martha have moved to Worthing and are living at 73 Marine Parade Worthing, where they are running boarding apartments. 

After this they lived at Mundsley 9 Wordsworth Road, Worthing. 

Christopher died in Worthing in 1935 and left an amount of £492 (approx. £25,000 today) to Martha. 

Martha died on 24th September 1943 in Chichester
