Life story

Life story

Mary was born in Shepperton, Middlesex, the daughter of Edmund Frederick and Jane nee Young. She was baptised at Shepperton on 11th July 1876. Mary's father died in 1879 and her mother in 1887. Mary and her sisters Jane and Emily were sent to live with their aunts Mary Ann and Maria at "Breinton" in St Botolph's Road, Worthing. As a young woman, Mary worked as a governess at Rogate in the north of Sussex. She returned to Worthing in 1914 and continued to live at "Breinton" until 1935. By then, her two sisters Emily and Jane were living at 11 Longfellow Road in Worthing. During the war, Mary moved in with a family at South Harting. By 1951, she had moved in with her sisters in Longfellow Road. Mary died at St Helen's Nursing Home, Reigate Road, Worthing on 19th January 1952. Probate was granted on 18th March to Jane Dorothy Thomas and Emily Frederica Thomas spinsters. Effects £5148 4s 1d. Jane died in 1954 and Emily in 1956. They are buried together at Durrington Cemetery.
