Life story

Life story

Millicent Finnis was born in Worthing, in 1852, to George Finnis, 25yrs, Police Constable, and Rebecca nee Kent, 27yrs. Millicent was the eldest of 7 children, and the family moved areas according to her father's occupation. In 1861 he was with the Metropolitan Police and the family lived in Westminster, London. Millicent became a pupil teacher at 18yrs, and within 10 years she was Governess to a private family. Millicent Finnis, 27yrs, married George William Burden, 21yrs, on 4th August, at Heene, Worthing. They moved to 14, Kensal Road, Paddington, where they lived for over forty years. George was a Civil Service clerk, later working for the Board of Education. George and Millicent had two children, Mabel Fannie, 1882, and Cecil George Edward, 1892. Their son was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme, 1915. Millicent died, aged 72yrs, on 7th August 1924 at Harrow Road, Paddington. Probate was granted to her husband, effects £185 5s 4d. Value 2020 - £11k.
