Life story

Life story

Philip was born in Shoreham in February 1863 to Jonathan and Louisa. He was baptised in Shoreham on 26th April 1863. Philip's father was injured by a chalk fall in a pit at Southwick, where he was working as a carter. He died in Sussex County Hospital at Brighton on 19th July 1862, some seven months before his son was born. Louisa found work as a nurse after her husband's death. . As a young man, Philip was apprenticed to a tailor. In 1881, he was living with his uncle, also called Philip, who was an infirmary warder at Lewes Naval Prison. (He later became Chief Warder at the prison and was much respected by the town). On 26th October 1889, Philip married Ellen Haylor at Heene church. The couple moved in to 37 Cobden Road where they occupied two rooms of the house. In 1899, they moved to 19 Eriswell Road. They had no children. They lived at this address until 1918, when they moved to 20 Heene Road. Ellen died here on 28th August 1928. In 1939, Philip was living with a family in Stone Lane, Worthing. He died on 18th April 1943 at Talawa Nursing Home, 42 Homefield Road, Worthing. Probate was granted on 11th October to Florence Martha Rowland widow. Effects £507 2s 8d.
