Life story

Life story

Richard Melville Clifford was born in Kildallan, Co. Cavan, Ireland, on 24th January 1841. He was the son of Captain Robert Clifford, J.P. 48yrs, and Mary Jane Morgan Williams, 36yrs. The Cliffords were a long-established family with military connections to the Indian Army. Richard was 1 of 9 children.

In 1858 Richard joined the Army and in 1873 he was Captain Clifford when he married, aged 32yrs, in Dublin North, at St. George's Parish Church; his wife was Celestine Sarah Maxwell, 20yrs. He returned to India where his 4 sons were born, Maurice W. 1874, Wigram, 1876, Richard H. 1877, and Roland M. 1878, a daughter, Catherine, was born in Dublin in 1885.

In 1892 Richard was Colonel Clifford, and when he retired, he had the rank of Major General. In 1911, Richard and Celestine were living at 12, Park Crescent, Worthing, they also had a London home at Belmont Grove. By 1915 they had moved to Placilla, Lansdown Road, Worthing, where Richard died on 10th November 1915, aged 74yrs. Probate was granted to Miller Hancorne Clifford, Esq., and Edward Miles Clayton, Inspector R.I.L. Effects £1340 15s 6d. Value 2022 - £146,700.
