Life story

Life story

Richard was born in Worthing, the son of Richard and Jane. He was baptised at Broadwater church on 7th September 1828. His father was a horse keeper and Richard followed him into the business. The family lived in Market Street, Worthing. On 24th November 1846, Richard married Elizabeth Hodges (Betty) at Broadwater church. The couple had five children, Richard, Henry, Emma, Charles and Clara. By 1861, the family were living in Prospect Place. Elizabeth died in 1865. On 27th February 1870, Richard married Mary Baynes, a widow, at Broadwater church. The family lived in Capel Terrace in Surrey Street close to the stables where Richard worked. Mary already had two children Ellen and Frank from a previous marriage and gave birth to a son, Frank in late 1870. By 1891, Richard was to ill to work as a stableman. The family moved from Marine Parade to Milton Street and Richard found work as a general porter. He died on 8th April 1908. No probate.
