Life story

When Rosemary Nancy Bassett Smith was born abroad on 24 July 1914, her father, the renowned architect, Walter Bassett Smith, was 55, and her mother, Mary Chevalier Boutel, was 37. 

She had four brothers: Thurston, Clement, Walter and John. 

They lived in Worthing in 1915.

Rosemary was christened on 10 February 1915 at Heene Church Worthing by the Rev. Charles Hollis who later that year officiated at her funeral. She was buried on 13th February 1915 at  Heene Cemetery, West Worthing, Sussex. 

Rosemary's brother Lieut. (Francis) Thurstan died on 21st November 1916 after a flying accident while in the Royal Flying Corp. 

Note: The inscription on the headstone is prefixed by A.M.D.G. (Ad maiorem Dei gloriam) For the greater glory of God.
