Life story

Life story

Samuel was born in Great Braxted, Essex the son of William and Mary Ann. He was baptised at All Saints Church, Great Braxted on 2 July 1837. Samuel's father was a carter and also the church clerk. In the summer of 1868, Samuel married Mary Hannah Barkus (sometimes known as Hannah) in Pangbourne. Her father Thomas was the local miller. Samuel's job as a coachman took him away from his family on many occasions. By 1881, the couple had three children and had settled in Kensington. Later, they moved to Clerkenwell where the couple looked after a lodging house as caretaker and housekeeper. By 1911, the family had moved to Worthing. Samuel still worked as a coachman as did his son Thomas. Samuel and Hannah lived with Thomas, his wife and their children in West Street. Samuel died at the end of June 1912 and was buried at Heene on 3rd July. No probate. His widow moved away from Worthing and died in 1927.
