Life story

Life story

Sarah Stubbs was born into a farming community at West Dean, Sussex, where she was baptised on 2nd September 1849. She was the daughter of William Stubbs, 41yrs, an agricultural carter, and Sarah, 36yrs, nee Walker, and was 1 of 6 children.

Sarah's father died in 1869 and she remained living at home with her mother and siblings until she married, aged 26yrs, in 1876. Her husband was William Lambert, 31yrs, a local gardener in West Dean, where they lived and had 5 children: William b.1878, Daniel b.1879, Henry b.1881, and twin daughters, Annie and Sarah b.1883.

In 1891 the family had moved to the hamlet of Treyford, near Midhurst, Sussex, where William was a gamekeeper. In 1898 Sarah was widowed when William died aged 53yrs. She moved to East Harting with her son William and daughter, Annie, where she lived for over 10 years.

In 1921 Sarah was in Worthing, living with her son, Daniel and his family, she died, aged 73yrs, in July 1923 and was buried at Heene Cemetery on 4th August 1923.
