Life story

Sarah Porter was born in Allington, Wiltshire, she was baptised on 11th June 1865 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Salisbury. Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Porter, 35yrs, an agricultural labourer, and Charlotte Augusta, 35yrs, she was 1 of 8 children.

Sarah was employed in domestic service in 1881, aged 15yrs. She married in Southampton, Hampshire, when she was 26yrs old, her husband, Mark William Walden, 29yrs, was a Railway Fireman, living in Alverstoke, Hampshire. They had 2 daughters, Vera Ginerva, b.1893, and Beulah Jessie, b.1895.

Mark became a Railway Engine Driver, and they lived in Guildford, Surrey, for many years until his retirement. The family then moved to Anglesey, 94, Ripley Road, Worthing, Sussex, where Sarah was widowed in 1929 when Mark died, aged 66yrs.

Sarah and her daughters remained in Ripley Road, she died there on 1st February 1944, aged 78yrs. Probate was granted to her daughter, Vera Ginerva Walden, spinster, effects, £1729 8s 10d. Value 2023 - £98,000.
