Life story

Life story

Catherine was born in Paddington, Middlesex, the daughter of Robert and Harriet. She was baptised in the Catholic faith at Our Lady, St Johns Wood on 8th November 1844. Robert Woodgate was a carpenter and his two sons worked in a local stained glass works. Robert died in 1854. On 31st August 1867, Catherine married William Henry Joynes at St Marylebone church, Marylebone. At the time, the couple were neighbours living in Stafford Street, Marylebone. William was a pianoforte maker. William and Catherine moved into her mother's house in Boscobel Place, sharing the house with Catherine's sister Agnes and her family. This situation continued for over ten years. By 1891, with such a large family of nine children, William and Catherine moved to Streatham. William handed over his business to his sons Harold and Walter and worked as a secretary for the United Friends Perpetual Benefit Building Society. William retired before 1911 and the couple moved to Worthing, living in Valencia Road. Catherine died on 27th April 1913. No probate. William died in 1925 and was buried beside his wife.
