Life story

Life story

Charlotte was born in Kidderminster, Worcs. the daughter of James Hamilton Costerton and his wife Harriett. Her father was a solicitor. Charlotte's mother died in 1868. She was baptised at St Thomas's church, Stourbridge on 26th March 1871. Although she was baptised as Charlotte, she was also known as Augusta or "Tita". On 2nd February 1882, Charlotte married Ambrose Phillips Price, a solicitor, at St James' church, West Derby near Liverpool. During that year, Ambrose lost his job and in December an appeal for information on his whereabouts was printed in the local paper. It seems the couple went to Gibraltar with Charlotte's sister Harriet Beatrice (known as Beatrice). Harriet married Joseph Whalley in Gibraltar. By 1885, Charlotte was living with a William Evans and gave birth to a child that year. (see Gibraltar records). Charlotte gave birth to a daughter Frances Mabel in 1889. The father was named as William Evans, a commercial clerk. Ambrose died on 4th April 1891 in Gibraltar. Charlotte continued to live in Gibraltar with her daughter and made several trips back to England. In 1913, she sailed for Gibraltar on the PandO ship "Egypt". Accompanying her was Mr George Campbell Whalley, her nephew. Charlotte returned to England but on 22nd September 1916, she went back to Gibraltar on PandO ship "Nellore". She is described as a widow and teacher. Charlotte died on 3rd May 1926 at Groombridge Nursing Home, Chaucer Road. Her address on the death certificate was 23 Browning Road, Worthing. Her probate was granted in Scotland on 30th August with a last known address of 82 Sinclair Drive, Langside, Glasgow. Her executor was George Campbell Whalley, bank teller of 323 Mosspark Drive, Dumbreck, Glasgow. Effects £295 10s 11d. Charlotte's sister Beatrice died in Glasow in 1953.
