Life story

Ernest Edward Ellis  was born in 1872 to Robert Powley Ellis and Emily Ann nee Rose. Robert had a 56-year-long career with the Great Eastern Railway Company.  Ernest followed a completely different path. He was a draper's assistant in Islington in 1891 and by 1901 he was a costumier and milliner at 48, South Street, Worthing, employing 5 assistants, who included his sister-in-law, Mabel J W Claydon. He had married Elizabeth Mary Naylor Claydon in 1897 and had 2 children a son, Eric, born in 1898 and a daughter, Edris, born in 1900. Ernest died at the early age of 48 on 11 April 1920 at Ardath, Manor Road , Worthing, leaving the substantial sum of £18,918 18s 8d.

Robert Powley Ellis - father of Ernest Edward Ellis

Son of a railway inspector, Robert entered service with the Great Eastern Railway Company in 1856 as a junior booking clerk at Ipswich station. He was transferred to various other stations until 1861 when he was sent to the Office of the Superintendent. In 1868 he was appointed Station Master at Kennet and later at Mistley and Sudbury. He became the local Goods Manager at Ipswich in 1875 and outdoor Assistant Goods Manager in London in 1878. In 1895 he was District Goods Manager and City Traffic Superintendent. Two years later he became Assistant Superintendent of the Line and Superintendent in 1905. In March 1907 he was made a member of the Royal Victorian Cross (MVO) by King Edward VII at Buckingham Palace in recognition of the many Royal rail journeys he arranged and accompanied for the British Royal Family and foreign Monarchs. On retirement in 1910, he was summoned to Buckingham Palace and presented with a Souvenir by King George V and received a gold watch bearing the Edward VII cipher and a letter from Queen Alexandra.
