Robert Powley Ellis - father of Ernest Edward Ellis
Son of a railway inspector, Robert entered service with the Great Eastern Railway Company in 1856 as a junior booking clerk at Ipswich station. He was transferred to various other stations until 1861 when he was sent to the Office of the Superintendent. In 1868 he was appointed Station Master at Kennet and later at Mistley and Sudbury. He became the local Goods Manager at Ipswich in 1875 and outdoor Assistant Goods Manager in London in 1878. In 1895 he was District Goods Manager and City Traffic Superintendent. Two years later he became Assistant Superintendent of the Line and Superintendent in 1905. In March 1907 he was made a member of the Royal Victorian Cross (MVO) by King Edward VII at Buckingham Palace in recognition of the many Royal rail journeys he arranged and accompanied for the British Royal Family and foreign Monarchs. On retirement in 1910, he was summoned to Buckingham Palace and presented with a Souvenir by King George V and received a gold watch bearing the Edward VII cipher and a letter from Queen Alexandra.
