Headstone description: 
A pointed top headstone with IHS in apex. The Ihs monogram, shown at the top of this headstone, is a very old symbol, dating back to the first century. Ihs is the abbreviation of the Greek name Jesus (Iasous) pronounced 'hasous'. Because Ihs is an abbreviation, there should never be periods after the I, h, and s. When portrayed in art, the artist will include a line above the hs to show it is an abbreviation. Grammatically, the monogram can be written in two forms, as Ihs or as Ihc. The Ihc is grammatically more correct because the letter 's' (sigma) is represented as a 'c' when in the middle of a word. However, it is an 's' when at the end of the word. The Latin phrase Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus, Savior of Men) can be abbreviated as I.H.S.

Life story

George was a civil engineer with the CPWD (Central Public Works Department) in India. The department was responsible for buildings, roads, irrigation, railways, etc. George was born in about 1861 Fatehgar, Uttar Pradesh on the south bank of the Ganges in the north west state of Punjab. He was British by parentage. He was a member of at least two Freemason Lodges. The first was "Hope Lodge" no.413 at Meerut, NW Provinces, India, initiation date 3 September 1887. The second was "Beauchamp Lodge" no.1422 NW Provinces at Rourkee Saharunpur, initiation date 15 January 1907. By this time he was a Senior Civil Engineer. In 1890 he had married Mary Morris Moriarty of Millstreet, Cork, Ireland. Their son, George Adam Moriarty Anthony, was born in Bengal on 27 January 1896 and baptised on 24 February at Etawah. Young George was educated in England at Haileybury College from 1910 to 1914 and went on to Imperial College, University of London, before joining the Queens (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, 9th Battalion, attached to the West Africa Frontier Force. He reached the rank of Lieutenant. A few days before his twentieth birthday, he was killed in action on 24 January 1916 and is commemorated at Ibadan in Nigeria. In 1911, George, snr., was still employed by the "Public Works Department of the Government of India". When he retired to England he lived at "Ravenscroft", St Botolph's Road, Worthing, and in 1922 he collapsed and died in a newsagent's shop, no.125, Heene Road, on November 16. His effects were left to Amelia Sophia Barlow, the widow of the Hon. George Thomas Barlow. Like the Anthonys, the Barlows had spent most of their lives in India. Amelia's maiden name was Anthony.

Obituary

Sudden Death in Shop - Mr. George Thomas Anthony aged 61 of Ravenscroft, St Botolph's Road, complained of feeling cold on the chest on Thursday and collapsed in a newsagent's shop in Heene Road, which he entered to purchase a paper. He died before medical assistance could be obtained. The West Sussex Coroner (Mr F.W. Butler) conducted an inquiry at Ravenscroft on Saturday afternoon. Mr Adie of Toro Bito, Shakespeare Road, with whom the deceased had tea, said he had seemed unusually bright when he left to go home about six o'clock. A post morem examination revealed heart failure as the cause of death, and the Coroner recorded a verdict to this effect.
