George Russell (buried 1924)

George was born in Gravesend, Kent, the son of George Ireland Russell and his wife Mary. He was baptised at Gravesend on 5th December 1838. His father was a surgeon who had a practice in the High Street in partnership with Dr Edward Meade. George was sent to a private school in Lewisham and then trained to be a surgeon. He travelled to New Zealand in the late 1850's and set up a practice in Napier. He also worked for the New Zealand Militia. By 1873, George had returned to England, working in Gravesend. On 17 November 1875, he married Emma Brewer, widow of John Brewer at St Luke's Church, Westbourne Park, Westminster. She had been living in Napier, New Zealand since 1866. and was widowed in 1873. The couple settled in Gravesend but by 1890, they were back in New Zealand, living in Hawke's Bay. After George retired, they returned to England and lived in Marylebone until about 1905, when they moved to Worthing, living at "Abbotsford" in Belsize Road. By 1911, the couple were living in Shakespeare Road. By 1922, they were living in Downview Road and this is where Emma died on 20th November. George died on 4th October 1924. Probate was granted on 22 November to Frances Mildred Coombe and Edith Coombe spinsters. Effects £4222 8s 9d.
