Life story

Life story

Jessie was born Jessie Mieville on the 6th February 1835 in Walthamstow, Essex. She was baptised on the 3rd of June. Her father Amedee Francois Mieville was from an Old Swiss family. Her mother Margaretta nee Green was from Shropshire. Her father Amedee Francois Mieville was from an Old Swiss family. Her mother Margaretta nee Green was from Shropshire. There is no record of Jessie’s family in the 1841 or 1851 censuses. It is of course possible that they were living abroad at that time. Jessie married Henry Meade Smythe on the 23rd May 1857 in St Martin’s Church, Dorking. Henry was a Cleric from Ireland. Jessie and Henry had 12 children, 3 of whom (Barnard, Henry de Courcy and Stella) died in infancy. Their first child Frederick was born in Suffolk in 1858 and their second son John was born in Germany a year later. Their daughter Jessie had been born in Worthing 3 months previously and they appear to have stayed in Worthing for at least the following 6 years where their next 3 children were born. In 1868 they were living in Oxford where their daughter Magdalene was born. In 1861 the couple were living with their children Frederick, John and Jessie at 2 Marine Parade, Worthing. They had a Nurse and a Nurse Maid. The property was a Private Lodging House. Henry was the Vicar of Brandeston in Suffolk at the time. In 1871 the couple were living in Vicarage House, Cople, Bedfordshire with their children Frederick, John, Jessie, Ralph, Henry St Aubyn, Augustus, Magdalene and Barnard. They had a Parlour and House Maid and a Nurse. Henry was the Curate of Cople. Barnard had been born in Cople, as his younger brother Theodore was to be later that year. Sometime between 1871 and 1876 when their youngest daughter was born, they moved to Caxton in Cambridgeshire. In 1881 they were living with children Frederick, Jessie, Henry, Augustus, Magdalene, Theodore and Harriet at The Vicarage, Caxton. Henry was by then the Vicar of Caxton. They had 3 servants: a House Maid, a Cook and a House Boy. Jessie died on the 10th December 1881. She was buried on the 15th December in Worthing. She was just 46 years old. In 1884 aged about 55, Henry married again in Portsea to a Fanny Catherine Pritchard and had 2 more children Rudolph and Barlow.
