Life story

Life story

Joseph was born in Shoreditch, Middlesex, the son of Charles and Martha. He was baptised at St Leonard's church, Shoreditch on 30th August 1812. The family lived in Phipps Street and Charles worked as a tailor. Joseph worked as a brass founder, an extremely hot and dirty job melting brass and pouring it into moulds. On 12th August 1837, Joseph married Caroline Dawson at St Botolph without Bishopsgate church. The couple moved to William Street in Islington where their daughter Emily Eleanor was born in May 1841. By 1846, the family were living in Shepperton Street, Islington where a son William was born on 12th August. By 1851, Joseph was running his own foundry employing 2 labourers. Joseph had retired to Worthing by 1871, living in Teville Road. He died suddenly on 8th February 1887 at South Villa in Christchurch Road, Worthing. Probate was granted on 4th March to Caroline Jupp widow and Henry Cox, 61 Essex Road, Islington, gas engineer. Effects £6268 19s 4d. Re-sworn £7008 19s 4d.
