Life story

Sarah Louise Bowers was born in Darenth, Kent, on 15th July 1857. Her parents were George Bowers, 67yrs, Paper maker, and Jane Bowers, 36yrs. She had 3 older brothers, John 10, William 8, and Benjamin 5. By the time Sarah was 13yrs, her father, now 80yrs, had retired, her brother, Benjamin, 18yrs, was an apprentice paper maker, and Sarah also worked in the business. In 1877, Sarah married Richard Arthur Dolding (known as Arthur) in Dartford, Kent, he was a Grocer, with a business in Horton Kirby, Kent, where they lived for nearly 20yrs, and they had 6 children; Herbert b.1879, Percy b.1881, Florence b.1884, Charles b.1887 (died 1895), Nessie b.1892, and Sidney b.1896. Arthur then became a commercial traveller for a Tea Merchant, during which time the family moved to Battersea and then to Worthing, Sussex, living at Northcote, Richmond Road. Sarah was widowed when Arthur died, aged 47yrs, on 25th October 1901. Sarah remained in Worthing with her daughter, Nessie, and together they ran a lodging house, living at Lismore, Wyke Avenue. In 1923, they were living at Eriswell Road, where Nessie died from TB, aged 31yrs. Sarah continued to live in Worthing and in 1939 she was at 60, Browning Road, with her unmarried daughter, Florence. Sarah lived until she was 92yrs and she died in Worthing, in 1950.
