Life story

Life story

William was born in Gaspe, Canada, on 19 November 1879 to (Philip) John Manger or Mauger, a general manager, and Agnes Frances nee Hyman, and was baptised on 3 February 1880. His middle name is illegible on the certificate - sometimes it is spelt Manger and sometimes Mauger. By 1891 the family were living in Jersey in the Channel Islands where John Luce was a merchant in the fish trade still connected with Canada and grandfather , Philip, was head of the household. In 1901William was a clerk in London but in 1911 he was an auctioneer living with his mother and a sister back in Jersey. No marriage was found for him. When he died in Stoke Newington on 16 December 1925 he left £2632 16s 2d to be administered by Sidney Henry West civil servant.
