His middle name is illegible on the certificate - sometimes it is spelt Manger and sometimes Mauger. By 1891 the family were living in Jersey in the Channel Islands where John Luce was a merchant in the fish trade still connected with Canada and grandfather , Philip, was head of the household. In 1901William was a clerk in London but in 1911 he was an auctioneer living with his mother and a sister back in Jersey. No marriage was found for him.
