Life story

Ambrose Brooker Birch was a London hosier with premises at 55 and 57, Old Compton Street, Soho. His father, Henry William Birch, was also a hosier. His mother was Harriet, nee Dancy, and Ambrose was one of at least 9 children. He began his career as an assistant to a grocer and. draper, Ambrose Brooker, possibly a relative, in Crondall, Hampshire. His own business he carried on in Old Compton Street, Soho. He never married and his address in his probate announcement was given as 50, Rowlands Road, Worthing, (also known as Egerton Lodge), but his name was not found in directories although the two spinster sisters to whom he left £683 4s 3d lived there for many years. Ambrose died on 15 October 1930.
