Life story

Life story

Augustus Frank Wildash was born on 1st March 1868 at at 67 Bartholomew Close within the Liberties of London.'The Liberties' were an area roughly bordered by the Tower of London to the east and the Temple Bar, Fleet Street to the west. They were suburban districts which did not come under the jurisdiction of the City of London.

His father Thomas Wildash from Stepney was a 44 year old pewterer and varnish maker. His 56 year old mother Esther Clark was from Standon, a village in Hertfordshire.

He was baptized at St. Bartholomew's the Great, a medieval church which had been founded as an Augustine Priory in 1123. It is London's oldest surviving church.

Three years later in 1871 Augustus was staying with his grandparents and 11 year old Ann Clark (a possible relation) at The Cottage, Paper Mill Lane, Standon.

By 1881 he had moved with his parents to 115 Amhurst Road, Hackney. At the time he was the youngest of four sons: Albert Clark (born 1854) and Stanley (born 1866) whom were both at school, and Edwin (born 1860) who served as a clerk to his father, Thomas.

Due to his fathers status as a pewterer Freedom of the City of London was confirmed on 21 year old Augustus on 19th December 1889.

In 1898 the now Croydon-based Augustus married Mary Elizabeth Trezise. She was born in 1865 at St Agnes in Cornwall.

By 1901 the couple had moved to 12 Palace Terrace, Wood Green, London. A decade later the childless couple had moved to 62 Palace Gates Road, Wood Green. Augustus was recorded as a commercial traveller selling varnish.

Older brother Edwin died on the 4th of March 1934 and is also buried at Heene Cemetery.

Before the outbreak of World War II in 1939 the couple had moved back to Mary's place of birth, Churchtown, St Agnes, Cornwall, where Augustus is recorded as a retired varnish manufacturer.

Augustus died on the 5th June 1942 at Chase Farm Hospital, Enfield. Before his death he had been living with Mary at 8 Viga Road, Grange Park, London, N21. He left an Estate of £17,346, 5 shillings 4 pence.

Mary died on the 22nd of December 1949 in Wood Green, London.
