Life story

Life story

Beatrice was born in Stratford, Essex, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Anne. She was one of five sisters and one brother. Her father was an umbrella manufacturer. By 1871, the family had moved to West Ham, close to Thomas's business. Thomas died in 1883, leaving an estate of over £6000 (approx. £402000 in 2020). Beatrice's brother Frederick took over the business but had sold it by 1901. The family moved to Wanstead and then to South Woodford. At the beginning of the First World War, Frederick and four of his sisters moved to Worthing, living at "Seabank" in Manor Road. They later moved to 73 Marine Parade and then finally to "Talybont" in Shakespeare Road. The family worshipped at Holy Trinity Church in Shelley Road and supported local charities. They were often seen helping out at Heene fairs. Annie was the first sister to died in 1927, followed by Frederick in 1942. Both were buried in the family plot in Heene Cemetery. Florence, the only sister to marry moved to Worthing about 1945 and died in 1950. She was buried at Durrington Cemetery. The three remaining sisters moved to 24 Wordsworth Road, where Mary Anne died in 1953. Nelly died two years later in 1955. Beatrice moved to "Ashmount" in Southey Road. She died on 28th June 1957 at "Seabrook Medical and Surgical Home" 14, Queens Road, Worthing. Probate was granted on 11th September to Donald Vivian Thomas Fairrie secretary. Effects £3149 14s 2d.
