Caroline was single, born in 1850, in Romsey. Her father, Merritt Read, was a Photographer. She was the eldest of their four children.
In 1871, the family was living in Church St., Romsey. Caroline, at 22, was a Dressmaker, as was her younger sister Emily. Their brother, Edwin, at 18, was a Shoemaker.
By 1881, William and Caroline had moved to Saunders Road, in Hammersmith, where he was a Printer.
In Broadway, Bromley, in 1891 William, still a Printer, was now Manager of a Machine Agency. With William and Caroline was their adopted son, Frank Hoare Shill, aged 10. He was born in Chertsey in 1882. Francis, Caroline's younger sister was also there a Dressmaker, single, aged 30. They also had a Domestic Servant.
By 1901, William and Caroline, with Frank, were still in Bromley. William's parents William and Ann, were also there, William Sr was described as a retired Cooper. Frank, at 19, was a Clerk and Collector of Accounts'
In 1911, William and Caroline were living at 10 Burlington Terrace, Rowlands Road. William was an Agent (Domestic Machinery), and Caroline was Assisting in the Business'.
Frank was now a Directory Canvasser, for Kelly's Directory, living as a Boarder in a house in Sutton. (He was married in 1908, but I haven't found any details of this.)
In 1921, William was described as Branch Manager. Domestic Machinery Depot. Messrs R. Nelson and Co. He and Caroline were still living in Rowlands Road.
